Eagle Headed Bushcraft Shepherd's Axe Made to Order

Eagle Headed Bushcraft Shepherd's Axe Made to Order

$975.00

This special axe takes its inspiration from Eurasian originals.

Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and several other nations all have their own versions of the shepherd's axe. It is a unique combination of a light tomahawk-like axe and walking stick. traditionally it was used by shepherds and mountaineers- one version of the shepherd's axe became what we know today as the ice axe. It could be used to cut kindling, build shelters and keep the flock safe from wolves or marauding bandits.

This example borrows elements primarily from the Polish "Ciupaga" it features a hand-forged axehead the poll of which forms a stylized eagle.

It has a piece of 5160 tool-steel forge-welded into the bit and is hardened and tempered so the axe is fully functional.

The axehead is attached to the hand-riven white ash handle with langets tenoned through a steel plate on top of the eye and pinned through the wood. The bottom of the walking stick/handle has a heavy steel ferrule and spike for traction on icy ground also pinned into place. the axehead, langets and ferrule are all decorated with simple stamp work.
